Throughout the season, we will publish a few reports on City matches. Here are ones from City 3’s first three matches

City 3 12-2 Lions 2
City 3’s first match of the season saw a comfortable win at Impington against a depleted Lions 2 team. Due to injuries and holidays, Lions only fielded 6 players, being 2 girls short. In the past sometimes we have struggled against divisions of 3 , but a good start to the match, getting scores on the board meant today there was no such problem.  There was a certain amount of early season rustiness to our play,  but in the first half we took full advantage of our spare girls, created plenty of opportunities, rand raced into a 9-2 half time lead. At half time, Andy talked us through how to improve, and recognising that the match was already won, instructed us to try to play more and ensure Lions didn’t create scoring chances. The second half was a low key affair, with defences dominating – Lions changed their defensive approach and became more effective as a result, and we made sure they didn’t score any further goals against us. The final score was 12-2.  Well done everyone who played, we have our first points on the board

Phoenix 3 8-8 City 3
In a late night fixture City 3 staged a late comeback to snatch a draw against Phoenix 3 that probably left both teams wondering what might have been. We also utilised rolling subs for the first time as Andy directing things from the sidelines.. Phoenix were quickest out of the blocks going ahead 2-0 before Chris scored twice to even it up. Phoenix responded to end the half 4-2 up but it felt like an even contest. In the second half however Phoenix started very aggressively and quickly scored twice more. Stu then steadied the ship with a penalty, they responded and then Rob scored. At 7-4 with 10mins left they called a time out, Andy encouraged us not to panic and scores the next two to put them under pressure. This we duly did through Emma and Stu. Alas then Phoenix scored from a free pass and we were 8-6 down with very little time left. Ella then won a penalty which Chris converted before Emma scored her second to tie it up with a minute to go. That proved to be the last score leaving the final result as 8-8. Great comeback from city 3, remaining calm when the heat was on, and taking our chances at the end.

Uni 2 5-16 City 3
City 3 scored a convincing victory against a young, energetic but inexperienced Uni 2 side at the Cambridge University ice rink, I mean sports centre. The first three scores were all penalties, as we used our experience to draw fouls from them. Other than one long shot from them, the first half was dominated by City , with a steady stream of scores and some good korfball, as we finished the half 10-1 ahead. The second half was a more even affair, they brought on fresh legs,  we continued to score regularly and it’s fair to say they got lucky with a few dodgy looking long shots (but they all count). Good points from the match to note are the range of scorers for City 3 and that we were 4/4 in terms of penalties taken and scored. Special thanks to Liz who stepped in late for Vanessa after she became ill, and Andy for team selection, tactics, rolling subs and generally keeping us all on the right track.
